Black Radish

We decided to try a different type of radishe having grown a couple of crops of the ubiquitous red radishes. I noticed a package of Black Radishes at the Knapps and so we took them home and stuck them in a tire. Strange beasts. Of course we didn't do any research on them until now. The seem to grow like weeds but most of them have huge, two and a half feet stalks and tiny, for the size of the stem, heads. And they are black. I pulled one of the ones that hadn't gone to seed and here it is. What a surprise.b I expected a little radish size head and lo and behold:


Really quite a weird vegetable. Apparently a very old one, with the ancient Egyptians using it.

how did it taste? It looks more like a beet.

They taste like a combination of Kolorabi and Radish with the texture of a Turnip. Some German friends of ours dropped by for an overnight visit and when the walked in spotted it on the cutting board, new instantly what it was, and showed me the "correct" way to eat it. Which is: slice it thin and then peel black skin off, and eat with some salt. Really quite nice. Apparently quite good for the respiration.

Slip Sliding Away

It's the fourth of January.  I am at 54 ° North and its pouring rain.  During a let up I slipped out ( literally ) without my crampons to feed the fire in the green house.  The dogs were laughing at me.  They have built in ones - but they didn't look all that steady either.. The good news is that four arm loads of firewood in the upstairs heater will keep the house warm and cozy for a day.  Some one has been stealing our firewood lately because of the 16 stock piled cords at least three has disappeared.  We suspect some one has been burning it. Got a bajillion projects on the go - some of them weather dependent.  I.E.  I don't like to work outside in the rain wearing crampons unless I really have to. Hope your getting around OK.

Fooled Ya!

Just when we thought it was time to start sorting out the seed catalogues and think about revamping the irrigation system the temperatures plummeted.  The driveways are skating rinks.  I've taken to using the studded snow tire equipped truck to make the rounds.  Feeding the fires.  It's safer - even using studded soles and ski poles I find my feet slipping on the hard fractured ice. Spent a couple of days doing some electrical trouble shooting on a friends logging equipment.  A buncher that has had a lot of re-wiring by people in a hurry.  I find equipment is like that. Electrical entropy sets in.  A relay is temporarily wired in place.  A wire replaced with one not quite the right size. Relay's cut out and wires left bare.  Makes trouble shooting a nightmare.  Of course nothing is exactly like the wiring diagram ( if I am lucky enough to have one..)  Wiring changes and additions and d...

New Family Members

Yesterday, the Home-on-the-hill gang grew by a couple of additions. Boose, a five year old female Calico cat, and Wasi, a four week old male grey and brown tabby kitten. They were having a free cat sale at the Vet's when we took Xena in for her shots yesterday. Boose,(Carrier Indian for "cat") was abandoned and looked a little ratty for a Calico but the vets nursed her back to health and when they found out I was looking for a shop cat they offered her up saying she was a little hard to handle. When I went to her cage she came running to me. The vet had a towel to pick her up with as she was scratched the last time she was handling Boose. I went in and the cat practically jumped in my arms and I put her in the cat carrier. I have her set up in my shop while she figures out that it's going to be her new home. Not that she is having any trouble fitting in. I spent some time with her yesterday in the shop. She checked it all out and comes running whenever I come into the...
