Mar 9, 2025 at 15:41:51 25° in Ghaus, last night it never fell below 11°. Mind you there was a ceramic heater on. It’s now on a thermostat that will come on at 10°.  Todays task is to start removing the existing grow beds. 



The overal project is to bring the four season greenhouse back into operation. Replace the sun degraded corrugated plastic and single pane windows with green house fabric.


The list, not definitive:


• remove existing grow beds

• Remove potting area

• Re route water runs

• Remove potting bench

• remove windows

• Install plastic

• Move 45 gallon drums to the front windows

• install grow shelves

• reinstall potting surface

• Build chicken area under potting bench

• Build outside Chicken run

• build Chicken access hatch. 

• Install ceiling fans

• Install grow lighting

• Plant stuff

• Install interior




The soil hasn’t had any water for two years. Dry as the proverbial bone.

The snow path is getting  bit easier to traverse. Roping up to make the crossing is no longer neccesary, but a sturdy trekking stick is still recommended. And an equally  sturdy snow dog to show the way.

Slip Sliding Away

It's the fourth of January.  I am at 54 ° North and its pouring rain.  During a let up I slipped out ( literally ) without my crampons to feed the fire in the green house.  The dogs were laughing at me.  They have built in ones - but they didn't look all that steady either.. The good news is that four arm loads of firewood in the upstairs heater will keep the house warm and cozy for a day.  Some one has been stealing our firewood lately because of the 16 stock piled cords at least three has disappeared.  We suspect some one has been burning it. Got a bajillion projects on the go - some of them weather dependent.  I.E.  I don't like to work outside in the rain wearing crampons unless I really have to. Hope your getting around OK.

Gate Progress

We took the weekend off to watch "The Longest Day" and a "Band of Brothers" marathon. We needed the time off and we also wanted to observe D-Day. We slept in until 7:30 a.m. A big difference than Friday when we got up at 4 a.m. to beat the heat while we worked on the lower, Savory Gate. This first pic is of the West side of the Main Gate at the house. It was a whole lot of work as we removed the cattle guard and dug it out to clean the ditch under it. And then filled the sides back in with old railway ties and added a 20 inch culvert to the drainage ditch we had dug earlier on the East side of the road. And we did it on the hottest day so far this year. Upwards of 30°C. It sure felt great to have it done. Painting later. The vertical slats are from the outbuilding that was built around the trees. Snow Sighting

We've been waiting for our first snow warning. It came this morning, across the valley and a few hundred meters higher. Probably a week or so before we get it. Adds a bit of urgency to the W.O.O.D. gathering and B.U.R.N. cycle. It's a sunny day and a logger friend dropped by yesterday and gave me a lesson or two. Valuable stuff. He felled one tree that was leaning at least twenty degrees over the pond right back 180 degrees the other way. We have enough felled wood now for the winter and quite a few loads for my friend, Chief Joseph's, sweats. Just have to cut it up and pack it out. Maybe all done today. We've been burning wood in the small living room heater as its been getting to zero℃(32℉) at night and sometimes only 5℃(32℉) during the day. I have been feeling a bit of a twinge in the back.
